Scope and Contents

Shireen Miles was the California State Coordinator for the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1985 to 1989. The bulk of these papers are from her time in that position as she participated in or lead national and state NOW events and activities. The collection contains her personal papers, NOW administrative papers and programs, subject files, newspapers and articles, photographs, artifacts, and audiovisual materials regarding the operations of NOW and the main issues that the organization was addressing at the time. The collection consists of ~ 9 linear feet. Materials are in English. 1968-2008

The collection is arranged into 10 Series, some with subseries. Abstract

Shireen Miles was the California State Coordinator for the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1985 to 1989. The bulk of these papers are from her time in that position as she participated in or lead national and state NOW events and activities. This time period covers a very significant moment in intersectional feminist history including Title IX, the Equal Rights Amendment, equality in the workplace, and the AIDS epidemic. Not only are her personal papers included here, but dozens of original articles, communications, and record-keeping documents are preserved regarding the operations of NOW and the main issues that the organization was addressing at this time. Materials are in English. 1968-2008

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated to the Donald & Beverly Gerth Special Collections & University Archives at California State University, Sacramento on June 11, 2014. Additions were donated on March 30, 2015 and July 25, 2022.

Related Materials

This collection compliments the papers of other feminists of significance, Sally Wagner and Michelle Collins. The Sally Roesch Wagner papers (MSS 2000/31) include Ms. Wagner's work with feminist issues during the 1980s, which is the same time period that this collection addresses. This collection is augmented by the Michelle Collins papers (MSS 2013/49), which include Sacramento NOW Political Action files and other feminist-related information from the late 1970s and early 1980s.
