Biographical / Historical
The Barrio Arte Program is a community art program that takes place in the Washington Neighborhood Center in Sacramento, Calif. Although the Washington Neighborhood Center has been around since 1952, the barrio arte program itself was established in the early 1970s as part of California State University, Sacramento's (CSUS) credential program.
Jose Montoya, a CSUS art professor, designed the program as a means for students to gain community outreach and teaching experience. The program focuses on Mexican American / Chicano art and projects aimed towards youths.

The Barrio Arte Program photo album was donated to the Department of Special Collections and University Archives by Jose Montoya in 2002.
